The Wonderful World of Wayne

My name is Lara and I first saw the Flaming Lips at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. It was my first exposure to the group and I was literally moved to tears. I felt there was a sense of enlightenment about thier lyrics and great fun in their music. I was an immediate fan! Recently, on Dec 30th I saw them at the Bill Grahm Civic Center. The accustics at that place sucks. It's hard to fill that room with sound and not have it echo. But, when the Lips came on the stage and played thier music, I felt as if every molecule of air resonated with thier sound and was wonderfully harmonious in that special Flaming Lips kind of way. They were so great!
During the second set, a girl named Heather passed out just beyond the front of the stage. Wayne Coyne stopped the show to make sure she got the special attention she needed. He later told us that she was dehydrated and was going to be okay. It was so beautiful to experience this compassion and concern for a fan, especially from the lead singer. I love The Flaming Lips!!!

Monolith Festival / Red Rocks '07

Man o' man ... what a difference from last year! I've seen the Lips twice now, both times at Red Rocks, and yesterday was such a different experience than '06. Don't know if it was the fact that this year I was first row center compared to 15th row last year, or if it had something to do with most of the people there being Lips fans instead of Ween'ers, but whatever the reason, I had an amazing time!

And for the first time in my life, I wept at a concert. I mean how can you not be touched by a live performance of "Realize", under the open sky of Red Rocks. Can any concert-going expereince even come close to touching this?

I don't put much stock in the meta-physical, but the only adjective that I can find to describe a show like this is "transcendent". Thanks galore to the band, the Monolith organizers, and all the new Lip'sters friends that I made over that incredible day.

Peace.

Lips iTunes Original

For those of you who don't use iTunes, just a notice that the boys have released a new album of live tunes available only through iTunes. Most of the songs are studio tracks, but a couple are show recordings. The gem of the album though are the commentary tracks from Wayne that are placed in between each of the song tracks.

It's good stuff.

I've been sitting on this news for a while since I didn't want to get any backlash from the corporate bigwigs... but the Flaming Lips are going to be in the new Sims Pets expansion. I've heard it and it sounds great. Great quote from Wayne:

"We've always been known to jump at opportunities that challenge us to do something totally fresh that we've never done. Needless to say, recording 'Free Radicals' in Simlish allowed us to do just that," said Flaming Lips front man Wayne Coyne.

Well ... I'm a fan for life now. A little late, I know, but as they say, "better late than never." The show at Red Rocks last night was just the final push I needed to move the Lips into my list of top 5 or 6 favorite bands. So, they now join Midnight Oil, the Doors, and the Dandy Warhols. Welcome aboard gentlemen!

No 5.1?

So, it seems the 2 disc CD/DVD Dolby 5.1 version of At War With The Mystics was not released. Both formats were slated to be released simultaneously today. However, checking my local shops, they all report receiving the CD only. The only info they received on the CD / DVD set is that it was pushed back...no indication as to when. WTF?

New album info

from CMJ:

http://www.cmj.com/articles/display_article.php?id=9047217

At War With The Mystics (Warner Bros.), The Flaming Lips' long-anticipated follow up to 2002's Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, finally has a tracklist for fans to ponder before the album's April 4 release date. As expected there will also be a DVD companion featuring extra tracks, videos and featurettes, all in a "mind-warping 5.1 moving mix that just may make some of you feel queasy," notes the Flaming info provided by WB. We're hoping for scratch 'n' sniff bunny costume action too!

The record was produced by Dave Fridmann and the Flaming Lips. The first single, "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song," will be out March 7 while the track "The W.A.N.D." is currently available on your favorite (legal) digital downloading service.

On first listen, it sounds as if the Lips are biting hard at the Polyphonic Spree, Grandaddy, and Animal Collective. Just kidding. But the tracks we've heard so far employ less of the electronic production tricks and squiggly synths of Yoshimi, builds towards a rocky rhymthic center, before tucking us into bed (but you know, a bed in space, as is the way of the Lips). The band also has a handful of live dates listed so far, though a full tour is most likely in the works for April and May.

Tracklist For At War With The Mystics:
01. Yeah Yeah Yeah Song
02. Free Radicals
03. The sound of Failure/It's Dark....Is It Always This Dark??
04. My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion
05. Vein Of Stars
06. The Wizard Turns On....
07. It Overtakes Me/The Stars Are So Big, I am So Small...Do I Stand A Chance?
08. Mr. Ambulance Driver
09. Haven't Got A Clue
10. The W.A.N.D.
11. Pompeii Am Gôtterdämmerung
12. Goin' On

Tour Dates:
03/11 - Sunrise, FL - Langerado Festival
04/19 - Edinburgh, UK - Usher Hall
04/22 - London, UK - Royal Albert Hall
04/24 - Birmingham, UK - Academy
04/25 - Manchester, UK - Apollo

Finally.... I got an "advance" copy of At War With the Mystics. Have listened a couple of times while I was at work, but haven't really given it a real GOOD listen. So far, I like what I've heard. Sort of Pink Floyd-ish but also sounding like the old Lips from the 90's.

Track by track comments of the new album by Wayne

Wayne's Track-By-Track of At War With The Mystics

THE YEAH YEAH YEAH SONG (WITH ALL YOUR POWER)

Steven had been recording in a separate vocal booth on his computer and I walked by and heard the crazy grouped vocals doing the "yeah yeah yeah" part and I was immediately hooked. This is one of those songs that points the finger at the pettiness of those in power but also points the finger back at ourselves - what would YOU do? Power in the hands of the inexperienced (which is what we would be) is very dangerous...

FREE RADICALS (A HALLUCINATION OF THE CHRISTMAS SKELETON PLEADING WITH A SUICIDE BOMBER)

I had a dream in which Devendra Banhart (the weird singer/songwriter) is pleading with a suicide bomber (who is about to go blow up something or somebody) to change his mind. And once he changes the deranged zealot's point of view, he (Devendra) immediately sympathizes with the frustration (mostly aimed at George W. Bush) that could make someone long for such exaggerated revenge...(Keep in mind that this is just a funny dream - these suicide bombers are clearly brainwashed religious fanaticals that are insane with their own agenda...they are beyond any pleads of reason and are not worthy of any sympathy.)

THE SOUND OF FAILURE

We have some friends whose father was dying of cancer - I say "was" because it (the cancer and his death) dragged on agonizingly for over a year - and they (our friends) were becoming, understandably, weary of being forced to be upbeat...

And I remember hearing a comment once about how annoying it was, to them, to have to hear this gratingly jubilant fake enthusiasm (usually hokey hyped-up pop groups like Black Eyed Peas, Destiny's Child, Ashlee Simpson, Hillary Duff, etc.) blasting out of the "Muzak" systems virtually everywhere they went. To them this cheerleader-type assault was really only effective if you didn't actually have any real psychic stress...And they felt that it was, surprisingly, helpful to them to try to understand their fears and their sadness - as opposed to pretending that it's "all good." And, you see, this is true insight... finally we know it's okay to have a troubled mind, it's okay to fail...

And so this song (which was written in the car on the way up to New York from Oklahoma while I drove and Steven played battery powered keyboard and computer) is about a young girl whose best friend has died, and everywhere she goes (like the friends I mentioned earlier) she must endure the empty optimism of the inexperienced. She wants to know, since it has arrived, what is despair, what is hope, what is failure...And what is in the darkness??

The line in the song, "so go tell Britney and go tell Gwen" is obviously a reference back to my friends and their Muzak incident...meaning, "Yeah, go tell Britney Spears and Gwen Stefani that their energy and their Prom Queen smiles only go to prove that they don't empathize with my sadness." I believe, in the song, that Britney and Gwen could be thought of as this grieving girl's less mature friends...and that she's not trying to go against them, she just doesn't want to pretend that she understands what she doesn't really understand - what death is...what despair is...what existential fear is... She doesn't know, but she's starting to find out...

IT'S DARK... IS IT ALWAYS THIS DARK?

A strange sort of afterword to the previous song. The voice and the strange blippy trail is actually my voice run through a computer plug-in effect called "Squirrel Parade"...Pretty cool... Anyway, it sounds like I'm saying "It's Dark", but I didn't say "It's Dark". I don't remember what it was exactly - just me talking before a song, but it gives the illusion of a young girl finding her way through a mystery...yes?

MY COSMIC AUTUMN REBELLION (THE INNER LIFE AS BLAZING SHIELD OF DEFIANCE AND OPTIMISM AS CELESTIAL SPEAR OF ACTION)

We had been using the musical elements of this song (it wasn't a song then) as an intro for our live shows, as I rolled around on top of the crowd in the now famous "Space Bubble." The power of the chord structure and arrangement kept inspiring me and I eventually pieced together this manifesto of defiance and optimism. It is my response to the naysaying know-it-alls who see life leading only to death and see nature as a cruel prankster designed to defeat the human spirit. And the truth (which I get to proclaim as if standing on the top of a holy mountain shooting lazer beams out of my hands - thanks to Steven's epic orchestration) is that no circumstance can ever defeat us unless we let it... Resilience in the face of failure is a manifestation of the mind...

VEIN OF STARS

I picked up a guitar that Steven had tuned to an odd open chord (F 6/9) and, without thinking, strummed it a couple of times and immediately sang (off the top of my head) the first line into the tape recorder, "Who knows, maybe there isn't a vein of stars calling out my name." My intention was to sing something cosmic about how humans have (as science reveals more and more about the nature of time and space) been abandoned by the stars...But I believe, once we finished it (the song and its production), it seemed to convey just the opposite...That almost despite science we are connected to the stars...Because we love to look at them, we hope maybe they love to look at us...

THE WIZARD TURNS ON...THE GIANT SILVER FLASHLIGHT AND PUTS ON HIS WEREWOLF MOCCASINS

A kind of space jam where the initial performance had Michael playing the CD player (in it was a CD with a recording of the drums), Steven playing the Rhodes and me playing electric bass. Mr. Fridmann ran the whole thing through a series of space echoes. flangers, filters and distortion boxes... The entire mix lays in the bed of a program called Metaphysical Function...Neat, huh?

IT OVERTAKES ME

I sometimes will do a silly songwriter's trick - I'll act like I'm writing a song for someone else and on this track I was imagining Gwen Stefani... I pictured her singing it and imagined what kind of production would happen. Initially I called the song, when it was intended for Ms. Stefani, "I Like To Masturbate and Think Of Outer Space"...and I still think that if she was doing the song it's a great title....But to think of me, a 45 year old man with a graying beard, umm, masturbating....is... well...(I'm uncomfortable even typing this)...unpleasant...so anyway...The song ends up being more about my occasional bouts of panic when accidentally contemplating the "Cosmic Reality", that is....that we (the Earth) are floating perilously adrift in a vast and endless sea of black infinity (outer space) and it is, when analyzed, a mindfuck...and yes I feel horribly insignificant....So anyway, what we ended up with, I believe, still sounds like a mashing of "Hollaback Girl" and "1969" by The Stooges...take some drugs and turn it up real loud...

THE STARS ARE SO BIG AND I AM SO SMALL...DO I STAND A CHANCE?

This section of the song captures, I think, the vulnerability and awe of this same scenario (the Cosmic Reality) within a cathedralesque womb-cloud of angelic voices... but instead of panic it is solemn and comforting...

MR. AMBULANCE DRIVER

The entire song, its key and chord structure, is built around the ambulance siren sample. When we first did it there was an eerie death coloring (probably due to the siren and the lyric about the girl being dead) that was very satisfying... But we found, with repeated listening, that the siren, somehow, subliminally disappeared and, to our surprise, it revealed a kind of Eddie Rabbitt (70's pop-country singer-songwriter) at the roller rink, easy listening teenager car crash ballad.

HAVEN'T GOT A CLUE

A friend of ours, Greg Kurstin (he played with us on the Beck tour and was nicknamed "Firefingers" by Steven due to his sublime playing of the keyboard) is an accomplished musician and has a great ear for pop sounds and structure...He's written songs with artists ranging from Enrique Iglesias to Karen O and he, upon my insistence, sent this unfinished track for us to build on. It was great fun and again (like the Gwen Stefani trick) it allowed us to create inside a different identity. The song is about a type of person that everybody knows and endures (we won't mention names). They blame everyone but themselves for all of their problems which they seem to have in endless supply. If they suffer, you suffer more... You know what I'm talking about.

THE W.A.N.D. (THE WILL ALWAYS NEGATES DEFEAT)

I was playing electric guitar, Michael was on fuzzwah bass and Steven was on the drumkit and we stumbled upon this druggy prog-rock riff and stuttery, funky beat. It was like Black Sabbath getting mashed up with Sly and the Family Stone or Stevie Wonder, and it sent us off in a wonderful new direction. The idea of a magic wand and magic powers occurred to me while watching a homeless guy in Oklahoma City. He was, I believe, Vietnamese, and had a cool looking wizardly beard and mustache and he carried a long stick, which he used as a kind of cane-weapon. And one day I saw him fighting an "imagined" enemy and the long stick became (as best I could tell) a kind of magic wand that made his invisible foe retreat. I mean... it seemed to give him a confidence that allowed him to defeat his hallucinations...and at first I thought "how sad...he believes this old stick is saving him"... but the more I thought about it, the more I envied him in a way...for the evil manifestations of his mind he invented a sparkling sorcerer's baton to lead his psychic revolution...yes!!...

And so we delved into a kind of radical protest rock mentality...We sing, "We got the power now, motherfuckers, that's where it belongs", but I believe it's cosmically empowering - not actually empowering. In the song, we rail against the greedy, corrupt evil beings who are in control and trying to enslave us... But our rebellion is simply to fight back - we have no solutions.

POMPEII AM GTTERDMMERUNG

A galloping Godhead melody (reminiscent of the German National Anthem) telling a vague story of a young couple planning their suicide. They live in a place where there are volcanoes erupting and they are going to take the train up the mountain and jump into the flowing lava as a symbolic sacrifice of their restricted love. The triumphant quality of the arrangement suggests that, just before they obliterate themselves, they realize that to make such a decision, to destroy yourself, is really just a point of internal motivation leading to outward action. And, if they could do something as extreme as annihilating themselves, why couldn't they just try to change the circumstances that have limited them?....Action is all we have....Worth mentioning is that this is Steven's first lead vocal on a Flaming Lips track...

GOIN' ON

The core of the chorus melody has a melancholy resolution evoking, abstractly, sections of Mahler's 9th Symphony...We are, subconsciously I guess, drawn to "the answer"... maybe that is why people have the urge to pray or sing or create...We long for this thing called "closure", but I believe that "closure" is, maybe, an illusion. This song takes a long stare at coping and the secret healing powers of slipping through time and space...How suffering, somehow, is relieved by simple...acceptance...

Well, I have officially started the campaign for the Flaming Lips to record a song I wrote for them...I just sent this to the address on their official site...wish me luck!

Hi guys,

I know you're all very busy getting ready to put out the new record (which I cannot wait for), but it would really help me out if you could do this song I wrote for you...

It came to me in a dream when I was camping at a puppet theatre farm in Vermont (Bread and Puppet)...the lyrics are quite self-explanatory and I could really, really use the exposure, as well as the million-bazillion dollars I would get from royalties.

By the way, I was able to be part of the Boombox Experiment in 1998 at the Middle East in Cambridge, Massachusetts and it really changed my life. You were all sooo nice, too.

"One night I dreamt of people who had lobsters for their heads

with useless human bodies dragged around by lobster legs

I can still remember how relieved I was to wake;

the philosophical implications were just too much to take

and I'm so glad the Lobster People were only in my dreams

to eat the heads and waste the bodies would really be such a shame

vegans, vegetarians and omnivores agree,

the Lobster People don't exist and that's alright with me.

Fishermen with butcher knives would chop the lobster parts off

perfectly good organs, meat and stemcells left to rot;

maybe they were Jesus-freaks or had the dough to waste

but, like a stripper amputee, it all seemed in such bad taste

and I'm so glad the Lobster People were only in my dreams

to eat the heads and waste the bodies really would be such a shame

Pagans, Unitarians and Krishnas all agree,

the Lobster People don't exist and that's alright with me

the Lobster People don't exist and that's alright with me..."

- thanks and Happy Holidays,
eddy dyer

"I think the Flaming Lips are proof that without skill, talent, money and good recording gear, you can make good records.

Chris Rock is right. We should make bullets really expensive.

Jesus is a great story, but you keep going back in time and that thing gets flimsier and flimsier - you'll never run into someone who says, 'Oh yeah, I knew him '.

Having sex with a lot of strangers is probably fine for some people, but it felt too weird to me. I never enjoyed it.

You can get high smoking scorpion tails. I don't think it's a good high and it takes about 50 scorpions per joint, so you risk getting bitten to death first. But all the good things in life are like that. If it doesn't kill you, it'll be cool.

The main difference between Americans and the English is the desire for intensity. Americans say, 'Let's do it now motherfucker, let 's go!' and the English are more like, 'Should we be intense right now, or should we wait till after dinner? 'I think anyone who stays in England long enough gets a little defanged.

If you hang out with a bunch of people who want to kill themselves, then you will become one.

Chris Martin from Coldplay and Michael Stipe, they're nice people, they don't think it's all about them. They know they're entertainers and they're providing a service. But Richard Ashcroft is a pompous dick.

Everyone cares about how they look, some people just don't do anything about it. Thing is, you always leave an impression even if you don't want to.

Most people who complain about downloaders used to sell a lot of records and can't admit that they're just not as popular as they were. For Metallica to say, 'You're taking food off of my baby's plate', that's just ridiculous. Instead of making $50m this year they're making $45m. Big deal! If people truly love your music, you can usually find a way to make money off them.

There's no equivalent in America for when English people say, 'kinell'. That's great, that.

Shadow animals aren't as easy to do as they look .

If one avenue of making money is not as lucrative any more, then think of something else. That's what the imagination is for. You can't just do things one way, otherwise you'll go the way of the tap-dancer.

People say I'm mad. They say, 'Look at him, his eccentric life. He has a beautiful wife, he wears Paul Smith suits and he has puppets!' But that's not madness. Real madness is horrible, where people don't recognise their families, they shit themselves, they're scared all the time. That's my one fear - of going insane.

All that heaven and hell stuff sounds like fun. But come on, be serious - nothing happens after you die. When you turn off the toaster, it doesn't sit there longing to make more toast, it doesn't become the ghost of a toaster. When the spark of life is gone, we're just a sack of flesh and chemicals with no ignition. That's why I live life with such enthusiasm.

The music business hasn't changed. It has always been about getting some Christ-like figure who has a lot of sex and money and looks good in pictures, and then exploiting him for money. Which is great!

When you're young everything seems so authentic, because you do everything for the sheer experience. When you're older, you realise it's all a fabrication, but that's cool too. We all fabricate our world view and our view of ourselves. It's all a big act.

The trouble with politics is that everyone's just pointing fingers at each other and asking, 'Who 's the bigger idiot?' I don't give a shit about Arnold getting elected, really. But if you think you're smarter or if you think Arnold's stupid, then get out there and change things; don't just stand at the sidelines and laugh.

Fame isn't like climbing a mountain, where you start at the bottom and with grit and determination you reach the top. The world gives it to you."

New on the Lips' new LP

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001736208

December 21, 2005, 10:50 AM ET

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
The Flaming Lips will unveil their highly anticipated new album, "At War With the Mystics," April 4 via Warner Bros. Although the full track list has not yet been announced, first single "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song" will be commercially
released March 27 in the United Kingdom.

That cut was inspired by the elaborate layered vocal harmonies the Lips recorded for a cover of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" that appeared on a recent
tribute album.

"We were perfectly able to conquer the challenges Queen presented, so [group member] Steven [Drozd] continued doing these strange vocal arrangements of him
singing into a microphone 30 times or something," frontman Wayne Coyne told Billboard.com in October. "We took that vocal treatment and made a song out of
it. It ends up being a self-empowering thing -- almost like an MC5 thing, but it's not talking about external things. It's talking about the power within
you. What would you do if you had the power?"

Other songs expected to make the final cut include "The W.A.N.D." (which will be released digitally on Jan. 10), "Space Bible" and "Time Travel??" Said
Coyne, "There are some tracks we've delved into production-wise, where we're trying to get some of that heavy rock'n'roll with heavy guitar riffs, but not just to be aggressive. On the last couple of records, we've tried to be more
expressive in beautiful ways. But sometimes, volume and intensity are great too."

Meanwhile, the Lips have set a Jan. 31 release for a DVD reissue of their acclaimed 1999 album "The Soft Bulletin." The set has been remixed in Dolby 5.1 audio and will also feature the outtakes "100ft Hands," "The Captain" and
"Satellite of You," plus radio sessions of the additional non-album tracks "Up Above the Daily Hum," "The Switch That Turns Off the Universe," "We Can't Predict
the Future" and "Remained Unrealizable."

"That, of all the records we've done, is really the only one that had seven or eight other songs we didn't release," Coyne told Billboard.com last year.
"For fans of that record, this is going to be a very cool item. 'The Soft Bulletin' gave us such a different perspective and a new life -- there's a richness there that will be fun to go back and revisit."

Hi, I'm new. Looking for FLips fans in L.A. to shoot the breeze, share brain waves, wake up w/ a placebo headwound, etc. IMHO, they're one of the best live bands ever. Comment from Wayne at Palladium show in L.A., 2003: "I'm halfway between Jesus & Santa Claus." Gotta love Wayne.

Tonight, on the MTV Video Music Awards, Wayne came out in his plastic bubble. If you missed it, I'm pretty sure MTV will be replaying the VMA's over and over and over and over....as they are prone to do. Anyway, Wayne comes out during the award for best Hip Hop video. Watch for Queen Latifah & Jimmy Fallon.

i'm ashamed to admit i came across the flaming lips far to long after they had been around a long time.
back in the day..sure i had heard of them but disturbingly or ashamedly enuff i never paid them much attention..
the fortunate thing is i. finally did ...!!!
four years ago or so..i'm not even sure..gettin old here..the brain cells aren't as good as they used to be..i was perusing the local cut out bin and came across "clouds taste metallic" for a mere 99 cents and had to give it a listen..
...ever since then ..i have been hooked and actually that cd is never far from my player....i'm not even sure why ....but...i'm glad they are still making music and maybe finally getting the respect they deserve for what they have been doing!!
just wanted to join this here tribe and post my two cents or 99 cents that is.......
.....best dollar i ever spent.....!!

This song comes from the album "Clouds Taste Metallic" and is called "Guy Who Got A Headache and Accidentally Saves The World". Here we go...

"Magnified up close, in pickle jar
is the last hope the world has... Yeah ... Yeah

Thinkin that his head surely would explode
His thoughts go deeper than ever... yeah... yeah

Something never dreamed in all the science books
the biggest light switch gets turned on yeah.. yeah

And he's on the way to a real first in all the universe yeah.. yeah
He saves the day and the world knows, the sonic boom explodes

Hesitant to tell the real reason, the Nobel Prize is given-Yeah-
It's hard to celebrate with a headache Oh Yeah... Yeah

And he's on the way to the real first in all the universe Yeah... Yeah
And he saves the day and the world knows. Now watch his head explode"

From the official web site: "The band recently completed their second session in the studio working on the next record. Tentative titles for the two tracks done so far are 'Mr. Ambulance Driver' and 'Space Bible'. With the cancellation of Lollapalooza they'll probably get back in there in the next month or so - well before the September session they had originally planned."

The Lips also are making more progress towards finishing the Christmas On Mars movie. They finished another track, "Vaginal Holocaust" and are looking to a "possible" 2004 release!

I now present the lyrics to "Chewin' the Apple Of Your Eye" which can be found on "Transmissions From the Satellite Heart" and "Providing Needles For Your Balloons"....

hey what were ya thinkin
when they were startin the show
yeah, i was there
but i didn't care at all
just tryin to find you
when you gost lost in the crowd
we're so drunk all the time
i like your helium voice

there was a guy in the seat next to mine
watchin the girls when the cops made us stand in line
yea, so if it's sad
well you still gotta live till ya die
man, everyone's chewin the apple you got in your eye
it like at the circus
when you get lost in the crowd

Not only are they working on songs for their new album, but they are also contributing a song to the upcoming Spongebob Squarepants movie and did a Devo cover (do I smell a Devo tribute album coming?).

Rhino will be releasing the Toronto SARS concert on DVD June 29th. I believe that there will be 2 Flaming Lips songs: Race For the Prize & Do You Realize.

Also, for fans of their older stuff, you can get "Twelve O'Clock High" from Atavistic video. It also features 2 Flaming Lips songs.

However, I'd like them to release a full concert on DVD. It's such a fun experience!

Been listening to "Clouds Taste Metallic" a lot lately. Anyway, here's the lyrics to "Brainville":

I've heard about a place, where they enlarge yer space
Don't cost ya very much, they seem to know their stuff,
they take pity on the small ones...
So I wanna go to Brainville. Let's get in
And overcome my inexperience
I wanna go to Brainville. Let's get in
And be the first one on the block that does.
They say it's the one thing everyone should have
I know it must look bad.
I know I need the help
they'd take me I can tell
four fingers and a toenail...
I wanna go to Brainville. Let's get in
And overcome my inexperience
I wanna go to Brainville. Let's get in
And be the first on the block that does.
Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da

ok, i dont know if this is old ground already covered in this tribe (im new here) but i was just wondering...
did anyone hear about the show where someone in a bunny costume played bass for the whole show (? or maybe just a song or two?) and at the end when he removed the bunny head it was justin timberlake? i have heard this from various sources and can even recall reading a little blurb about this on the internet. this was a while back but not TOO long ago...i think yoshimi had just been released.

Here's an interesting one.... the lyrics to "Ode To C.C. Part One" appear when you play the song backwards:

"Mom you fucked up when you raised me.
I don't know, i don't know, i don't know.
Mike say something.
What, I can't hear you?"

and I haven't stopped smiling! Great fun, great festival and the Lips were definately the high point for me. Wayne came into the crowd in a giant bubble. Balloons all around...the nun puppet... much fun! One sad note was that due to tech difficulties in the beginning, they had to cut their set short. I have a camera phone and have this great picture of a huge white balloon coming right at me! I'll upload the pic soon. Anyone else there?

"Shine On Sweet Jesus (Jesus Song No. 5)" from the album "In a Priest Driven Ambulance":

Waitin' for my ride
Jesus is floatin' outside
(Shine on, sweet Jesus, on me)
Watchin' the water rise
I'm gettin' lost in the tide
(Cry all your teardrops on me)
While I'm still myself,
Your blankets covered me
Covered me while I was still asleep

Watchin' the planets shine
Reflecting yourself in the sky
(Shine on, sweet Jesus, on me)
Scraping these smiles of mine
Impossible one at a time
(Cry all your teardrops on me)
While I'm still myself,
Your blankets covered me
Covered me while I was still asleep

Jesus is at my side,
Wondering what he will find
(Shine on, sweet Jesus, on me)
Watchin' the water rise
I'm gettin' lost in the tide
(Cry all your teardrops on me)
While I'm still myself
Your blankets covered me
Covered me while I was still asleep

For "Love Yer Brain" off of "Oh My Gawd..."

Sometimes I don't know what to think about the world
When this guy is burnin' up in the street with gasoline
And the flames show no mercy
So when you really need someone to talk to you
It doesn't always work like it's supposed to

You can love yer brain
Even if it slips down the drain
Man, I'm not no drug addict
But a person's gotta have something
To keep him from going insane

Well, this man kills this other man
Who's killed this other man, so it's okay
And this fourteen year old's sittin' in the electric chair
Smilin' and smokin' a cigarette
So I guess I was right all along readin' Mad magazine

does anyone remember the episode of 90210 where the flaming lips played in a club? of course they played "vaseline" and it was one of the later episodes right before the show got cancelled.
i know a guy who was obsessed with the flaming lips way before i had ever heard of them and he knew they were gonna be on so he recorded it. i got to see it a couple years later.

For "All We Have Is Now" From "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots":

As logic stands you couldn't meet a man
Who's from the future
But logic broke as he appeared he spoke
About the Future
"We're not gonna make it" He explained how
the end will come - you and me were never meant
to be part of the future -
All we have is now -
All we've ever had was now
All we have is now
All we'll ever have is now

I noticed that he had a watch and hat
That looked familiar
He was me - from a dimension torn free
Of the future
"We're not gonna make it" He explained how
the end will come - You and me were never meant
to be part of the future -
All we have is now -
All we've ever had was now
All we have is now
All we'll ever have is now -

All we have is now -

Here are the lyrics to one of my all-time favorite Lips' songs:
Put the Waterbug In the Policeman's Ear.

"My brother's at the store
a genius when he's bored
He contemplates his consciousness
he feels his hands, they sweat
he can't connect it yet
he pulls out his resources
and he calls up the insects he commands
and the waterbugs
attack the policeman

My brother's at the door
he get's up off the floor
he contemplates...his escape
but a guard waits at the door
he feels his powers soar
he pulls out his resources
and he calls up the insects he commands
and the waterbugs attack the policeman

Tries to make it home
he stops to use the phone
he can't remember where the house is
but a cop waits at his car
and he needs his friends once more
he pulls out his resources
and he calls up the insects he commands
and the waterbugs attack the policeman"

Yoshimi DVD

From Pitchfork Media:

"Cory D. Byrom reports:
While the words "quality control" and "indierock" aren't often bandied about in the same breath, Pitchfork was recently tipped to a lack of the former in Warner Bros' oft-delayed
but finally released DVD-audio version of Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. As it turns out, many fans have complained that the last 20 seconds or so of audio for the closing track, "Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia)," is missing entirely. The song abruptly ends on a premature note while the on-screen psychedelic cartoon plays on. Talk about popping the cork before the party is over!

According to an e-mail sent by the Lips' management team, "Scott [Booker] and the Lips are aware of the problem. He [Booker] said a decision would be made through Warner Brothers on what to do." So there you have it-- fans can expect some news on that soon, presumably at the Flaming Lips website."

This song, "Up Above the Daily Hum" is one of my new favorites and comes on the "Wastin' Pigs Is Still Radical" EP. While this EP is out of print, you can download it from ITunes.

Wondering at the scope of my experience
Cautious so not to be cold
Caught up in the comfort of what I once was
Lost in all the brand new possibility
Oh to be
In the middle
Happy on the pull of the past
Just before the future comes
Hoping for the rush of some experience
That could elevate me

Up above the daily hum
Up above the daily hum
Up above the daily hum
Up above the daily hum

When is this all over
When does the next one begin
Happy on the pull of the past
Just before the future comes
Hoping for the rush of some experience
That could elevate me

Up above the daily hum
Up above the daily hum
Up above the daily hum
Up above the daily hum

This song comes from their new EP "Ego Tripping At the Gates Of Hell" and is called "Sunship Balloons":

(speaking) "Now listen..
I don't know
the dimensions of outer space...
But if our ability to feel love
turns out to be just a cosmic accident...
I'd like to think this means
the universe is on our side.

(singing)
I don't know
How far a man can go
'Till he finds a way
Oh, that's you and me.

Let's do it once
Let's do it twice
Let's do it all night 'till the sunrise
Comes too soon
In our sunship balloons

(speaking)
Now listen...

(singing)
I don't care
'Cause we're gonna find a way
To fly to the sun
Oh, it's you and me

Let's do it once
Let's do it twice

I knew they sucked - I did - I heard them years ago & have avoided them ever since - I've heard a lot about them recently though from sources that I THOUGT were some what credible - so I thought I'd check them out again... only to find that time has only allowed them to fine tune how much they suck! The Flaming Lips suck my ass - SOOOOOO much!!!

Happy holidays! Here are the lyrics for "Christmas At the Zoo":

"There wasn't any snow on Christmas eve and I knew what I
should do, I thought I'd free the animals all locked up at the zoo
I opened up the fence where the peacocks were, the lamas were
unleashed the snakes and seals could all get out, but they
Refused to leave....
All of the animals agreed they're not happy at the zoos
But they preferred to save themselves, they seemed to think
they could...
The elephants, orangutans, all the birds and kangaroos all said
thanks but no thanks man, but to be concerned is good...
It started to snow on Christmas Eve in the middle of the night
walkin through the state park zoo and everything is white..."
